Our Story

Our Story

Deaf Black Friendly Hub UK was created in response to the lack of safe,
inclusive spaces for Deaf Black people and their families in the UK.

The organisation was founded to promote British Sign Language (BSL),
support mental health and wellbeing, and empower Deaf Black voices.

Our aim is to reduce isolation, challenge inequality, and build strong,
supportive communities where Deaf Black people feel seen, heard, and valued.

Founder & Our Mission

Dolapo Akande is the Founder & Chair of Deaf Black Friendly Hub UK.

Dolapo founded Deaf Black Friendly Hub UK with a vision to empower Deaf Black people to improve their wellbeing and feel empowered to achieve their dreams. Too often, Deaf Black people face barriers and discrimination that affect their daily lives, confidence, and opportunities. I want to challenge these barriers and create positive, lasting change.

I strongly believe that Deaf Black people can achieve anything they set their minds to. Access to communication through sign language is essential, and it is important that Deaf Black people feel comfortable, respected, and understood in their own language and culture.

Through Deaf Black Friendly Hub UK, I encourage Deaf Black people to feel confident in who they are and to live their lives with equality and pride. Our hub is a safe, supportive, and inclusive space where Deaf Black people can grow, connect, and thrive.
